At Abram's Knee
Written and performed by April Turner
Much in the same way elders in traditional Africa imparted
wisdom to young people under baobab trees, Abram meets his granddaughter,
Summer, under a South Carolina pecan tree. He talks. She dances. He uses
humor, issues threats and tells stories from his life to help her identify
her destiny. He calls it, "A crash course in how to use good common
sense."
At Abram's Knee masterfully weaves music, storytelling
and African dance into a spirited conversation about family, life, love
and the power that comes with knowing where one fits in the world. The
play also addresses broader societal issues such as elder care and discrimination.
Touted by Skirt Magazine as one of the best actresses
to come out of the south in recent years, April
Turner absolutely becomes this warm, funny, insightful 75 year old
man. Her dancing is also sharp, full and mesmerizing.
