Ancient meets urban when Jamal and Manassah combine traditional
spiritualism and contemporary science (fiction) to solve their marital
disputes. Ancient Future combines live dance and drama with film
animation media. Audience members also experience the story of Jamal
and Manassah via a companion visual art exhibit that precedes the
performance.
Carlos Spivey currently teaches fine art and animation
at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, California. He has received
international recognition as a dancer, gymnast, educator and stuntman.
His professional and community service endeavors have taken him
to countries around the world including Ghana, Cuba and Papua New
Guinea. His work as a visual artist has earned him grants and commendations
from organizations such as J. Paul Getty Foundation and the Los
Angeles Cultural Affairs Department. Spivey has been employed with
media giants, such as Disney, but his life's mission as an artist
is to out optimism and spiritual visions of self by transcending
stereotypes. His animated films The World is a Drum,
Whisper and Mama Seed Tree are currently available
on video. April Turner is an accomplished
writer, actress, producer and dancer. Among her produced writing
credits are the impactful social dramas Chocolate
on the Outside, Starlight and Moonshine Times, Pickle
& Lil'Junior and Nikky's Gone. As an actress she
has had roles in many made for television movies ("The Perfect
Daughter," "The Ditch Digger's Daughters" and "Texas
Cadet Murders"). In addition to making a recent guest appearance
on the hit TV show, "ER", this actress to watch has had
major roles in independent features such as Truman Capote's "Other
Voices, Other Rooms" and "Morning."
In addition to being a prolific playwright
and theatrician, April Turner performs traditional West African
dance.
