April Turner, a native of Charlotte, is an accomplished writer, actress, producer and dancer. Among her produced writing credits are C.O.T.O.: Chocolate on the Outside, Reservations, Starlight and Moonshine Times, Pickle & Lil'Junior and Nikky's Gone. Ms Turner has had roles in the made for TV movies, Ditch Digger's Daughters, The Perfect Daughter, Her Deadly Rival, Stephen King's The Night Flier and Texas Cadet Murders among several others. She co-starred in the major motion pictures, Morning and Other Voices, Other Rooms. Turner was also featured on the hit NBC drama, ER, in an episode titled "Middle of Nowhere." She recently had roles on the hit teen drama, "One Tree Hill" and the science fiction drama, "Surface" for NBC.
She has successfully presented stage productions that have been warmly received from New Jersey to Florida to Oklahoma. C.O.T.O.: Chocolate on the Outside was a featured production in the 1998 Piccolo Spoleto Theatre Series and has been a favorite at universities and arts institutions in the years since. This contemporary drama with comedy, tours nationally, making a positive impact in communities throughout the United States. In 2002, the play received a production at the famous Stella Adler Theatre in Hollywood, California. C.O.T.O.: Chocolate on the Outside has also proved to be a valuable text for professors to use in drama courses and classes that examine literature and social issues. Recently she was honored with the National Performance Network Creation Fund Grant. She also is the 2005 recipient of the Mahogany Dime Award for Excellence in the Arts in North Carolina and the Pearl Award for Outstanding contribution to the Arts in Mecklenburg County.
Ms. Turner's residencies, workshops and theatrical innovations have made her a favorite among presenters, schools and theatre organizations nationwide. She uses the arts to expose young people to new ideas and inspire them to maximize their potential. In addition to being a prolific playwright, April Turner is a passionate dancer. For fifteen years her dance performances and workshops have enlightened, entertained and promoted cultural awareness in thousands of schools, theatres, learning programs, churches and civic organizations from North Carolina to Los Angeles. Ms. Turner has also gained international renown as a guest performer at the Demba festival in The Gambia, West Africa and later as a dance workshop facilitator in Brazil.
Currently, Ms. Turner offers script consultation, editing and ghost-writing services. She has just finished her first novel, titled Soul Safari. In all things, this UNC-Chapel Hill graduate seeks to be an asset to the local and world community as an artist and citizen.
